The Beginning
Remembering life on the island of Trinidad was the motivation for raising Black Angus cattle. On pastures south of Atlanta, one happy bull, along with mama cows, calves, heifers and steers reside. Their keepers, Arthur and Betty Ferdinand see to it that they thrive in a natural environment. A lover of nature and animals, as a child in Trinidad, Arthur spent many hours outside – catching birds, tending chickens, goats, and pigs. There were only two village cows, and they belonged to other families. Why cows now? Arthur will tell you because he never had one as a child and it gives him a good reason to relive his “outside life” of childhood. Why Black Angus? Because Black Angus is a choice breed with genetics that predict they will thrive on pasture. Why Chaguanas? The Borough of Chaguanas, in Trinidad and Tobago was named for the indigenous Amerindian tribe that originally settled there before the time of Christopher Columbus. The strength in the sound of the word and the sense of being tied to the earth the word evoked, reminded us of our herd bull….hence Chaguanas.
